Dyeing new cloth

Dyeing new cloth
I had a great time yesterday with my chum Mary P doing a whole batch of fabric dyeing.  I used the method of dyeing fabric in freezer bags that Helen Deighan uses in her very helpful book.  I love dyeing fabric and had promised to show Mary a simple method for  producing primary, secondary and tertiary colours round a basic colour wheel.   Using Procion dyes and  starting  with only three basic primary colours (turquoise, lemon yellow and cerise)  and black we  produced a range of fabrics.  Then we varied the red the blue and the yellow to get a great range of other hues and some lovely muddy colours.

Silk and linen pieces

The fun part was in using 11different cotton, linen and silk fabrics so each batch of colour had several samples of between an eighth and a fat quarter.  We also popped in some silk waste, spent cocoons and undyed cotton and linen thread for fun.   The day of course also involved lots of lunch, chat and laughs.  It's amazing how much fabric two people can dye, rinse, dry and iron in the course of 7 hours!

the spoils of the day

I have already made use of some of the fabrics in one of my 'Bordering Project' pieces which should hopefully be completed by this weekend.  I will bring you news of that in the new year.

Wishing you fun and much stitching in the little that remains of 2010 and into 2011.

Hi Doreen - thanks for all the comments you have left. Of course we all need new fabric due to shortage in stash (!) so starting the year with a new pile of fabric is really a must. Happy new year.
